Does Your Business Really Need a Website, or Is Social Media Enough?

Cara Breytenbach ·

If your business has thousands of followers on Instagram or Facebook, you might wonder whether you really need a website. If your social media ads are bringing in enquiries and customers can contact you directly, a website might feel like an unnecessary expense.

But having a strong social media presence and having a professional website are two different things. Social media can help people discover your business, but a website gives potential customers a central place to learn about your services, explore your products, view your work and decide whether they want to do business with you.

At Seeded Systems, we believe a website should do more than look good. It should represent the quality of your business, build trust with potential customers and make it easier for people to take the next step.

Why Do So Many Businesses Avoid Getting a Website?

There are a few reasons business owners put off building a website, but I believe cost is one of the biggest.

A professional website can feel like a significant investment, particularly for a small business that is already spending money on advertising, stock, staff or other operating expenses. If the business is generating leads through social media, it can be difficult to justify spending more money on something that might not feel immediately necessary.

Another common reason is that businesses believe their social media profiles are enough.

Imagine a company with 11,000 followers on Instagram and 8,000 followers on Facebook. It runs advertisements, receives enquiries and has built an audience. From the owner's perspective, why would they need a website if social media is already bringing in business?

There is also the time involved. Some business owners worry about finding the right designer, explaining how they want their website to look, going through endless revisions or waiting months for the finished product.

These concerns are understandable. However, I think it is worth looking at the bigger picture: what opportunities could your business be missing while you wait?

Social Media Is Not a Replacement for Your Website

Social media is a valuable marketing tool. It allows businesses to share content, advertise their products and services, build an audience and communicate with potential customers.

However, social media does not always give potential customers everything they need to make a decision.

Someone might discover your business through an Instagram advertisement, visit your profile and like what they see. But what happens when they want more information?

They might want to compare your services, view a complete portfolio, understand your pricing structure, learn more about your process or find answers to specific questions. If that information is scattered across posts, captions and stories, the customer has to work harder to find it.

A website brings that information together in one place.

Instead of asking potential customers to scroll through your social media profiles or wait for a WhatsApp response, you can give them a clear, organised experience where they can explore your business at their own pace.

Your social media channels and website should work together. Social media can attract attention, while your website helps turn that attention into informed enquiries, bookings and purchases.

Your Website Is Often a First Impression of Your Business

One of the biggest reasons I believe businesses need a website comes from my own experience as a customer.

Think about looking for a wedding venue, a service provider or a company on Google. You find a business that looks promising, but when you search for its website, there is nothing to explore.

You cannot properly view its work, learn about its services or find all the information you need in one place. You might have to send a WhatsApp message and wait for a response, or try calling the business and hope someone answers.

That creates unnecessary friction.

When I look for a company, I want to understand what it offers before making contact. I want to see the quality of its work, explore its services and get a feel for the business.

I see a website as a visual representation of the quality a business delivers. The design, photography, information and overall experience influence the impression people form of the company.

If a business has invested in a professional online presence, it can make it easier for potential customers to understand what the company offers and assess whether it is the right fit for them.

Of course, not having a website does not automatically mean a business is unreliable or unsuccessful. However, without one, it can be harder for a new customer to evaluate the business and feel confident about taking the next step.

You Could Be Losing Customers Without Realising It

Imagine someone recommends your business to a friend or colleague.

The recommendation creates interest, so the potential customer searches for your company online. They want to see what you do, look at examples of your work and find out how to get started.

If they cannot find a useful website, they might have to piece together information from social media or contact you directly.

Some people will take that extra step. Others might move on to a competitor whose information is easier to access.

This is particularly important for businesses that rely on referrals. A recommendation is valuable, but it does not guarantee that the person receiving it will become a customer. They still need to decide whether they trust your business and whether your offering suits their needs.

A professional website can help bridge that gap by giving referred customers somewhere to go after hearing about you.

It can also make the customer journey easier by providing:

  • Clear information about your products and services.
  • High-quality photographs and examples of your work.
  • Answers to frequently asked questions.
  • Contact details and enquiry forms.
  • Booking options or links to purchase products.
  • Information that customers can share with other people.

The easier you make it for someone to understand your business and take action, the fewer unnecessary obstacles you place between their initial interest and a potential sale.

What Makes a Good Business Website?

Not every website will deliver the same experience. Simply having a website is not enough. It needs to be designed with your business, your customers and your goals in mind.

When choosing someone to build your website, there are several things I believe you should look for.

1. A Strong Landing Page

Your landing page is the first impression of the first impression.

When someone visits your website, they should quickly understand what your business does, what you offer and why they should continue exploring.

A confusing layout, unclear messaging or a weak opening section can cause visitors to leave before they have seen what your business can offer them.

The landing page needs to capture attention while communicating the right information. It should feel professional, reflect your brand and give visitors a clear reason to keep reading.

2. High-Quality Photography and Images

You can have a beautifully designed website with excellent typography, carefully chosen colours and a well-organised layout, but poor-quality images can immediately reduce the overall impression.

Photography is particularly important for businesses where customers need to visualise the product or experience before making a decision.

Think about wedding venues, event companies, accommodation providers, restaurants or businesses selling physical products. Potential customers want to see what they are getting.

High-quality images help communicate the standard of your offering. They allow people to explore your work and build a clearer picture of what they can expect.

Your images should complement the design rather than feel like an afterthought.

3. Creativity That Fits Your Business

When choosing a website designer, look beyond whether a website looks attractive.

Explore their portfolio. Do all their websites look almost identical, or do they demonstrate creativity and an understanding of different businesses?

Your company is unique, and your website should reflect that.

A website for a wedding venue should not necessarily look like a website for a technology company. A professional services business might need a different approach from an online store.

The design should suit your industry, audience, products and brand. Creativity is not just about making something visually interesting; it is about creating an experience that makes sense for the business.

At Seeded Systems, we believe website design should be tailored to the client rather than forcing every business into the same template and visual style.

4. Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)

A beautifully designed website is only useful if potential customers can find it.

Search engine optimisation, commonly known as SEO, helps search engines understand your website and can improve your chances of appearing in relevant search results.

For example, someone searching for a wedding venue in a particular area might discover businesses through Google. If your website is structured well and provides relevant information, it can help potential customers find and explore your business.

SEO is not an instant guarantee of a first-page ranking. Results depend on factors such as competition, the relevance and quality of your content, your website's technical setup and the work done over time.

However, discoverability should be considered from the beginning of the website project, rather than treated as an afterthought.

5. A Clear Path From Visitor to Customer

Your website should have a purpose beyond displaying information.

What do you want visitors to do when they arrive?

Perhaps you want them to book a consultation, request a quote, make a reservation, enquire about a service or purchase a product.

The website should guide them towards that action.

Your pages need to work together logically, with clear navigation and calls to action. Visitors should not have to search endlessly to find your contact details or work out how to make a booking.

A good website makes the next step obvious and convenient.

6. A Professional Process and a Reasonable Turnaround Time

The website development process matters, too.

When you invest in a website, you want to know that the person building it is committed to the project, communicates clearly and is working towards getting it live.

Quality takes time, and rushing through important decisions can affect the result. However, the process should also have direction and momentum.

Ask potential designers how they manage projects, communicate progress, handle feedback and approach the launch.

Your website is meant to become a working part of your business. Getting it live is an important milestone, because that is when it can begin supporting your online presence.

Is a Website an Expense or an Investment?

If cost is the main reason you have not built a website, I would encourage you to look at it as a business investment rather than simply an expense.

I believe every business should consider website development as part of its capital budget and long-term growth plans.

A website can support your marketing, help potential customers find you, communicate the value of your offering and make it easier for people to enquire or buy.

The return you receive will depend on your business, what you sell, your pricing, the quality of the website, your marketing and how effectively the website converts visitors into customers. There is no guarantee that a website will pay for itself within a month or generate a specific return.

However, it is worth considering the potential cost of not having one.

How many people have searched for your business but struggled to find enough information? How many referrals might not have progressed because the customer could not properly evaluate your offering? How many potential customers might have chosen a competitor because their services were easier to understand online?

These are important questions to consider when deciding whether a website is worth the investment.

If your budget is limited, you do not necessarily need to begin with a complicated website full of features you do not need. Start by identifying what your business needs, which pages are essential and what would help your customers make a decision.

The goal is to invest in a website that serves a purpose and can grow alongside your business.

Why We Built Seeded Systems Around Helping Businesses Grow

At Seeded Systems, we want to help businesses build a stronger online presence without making the process unnecessarily expensive or complicated.

We focus on creating professional, creative websites at affordable prices. We want each website to reflect the individual business rather than look like a generic version of every other site.

We also understand that the experience matters just as much as the final design.

We aim for a quick turnaround time while giving each project the attention needed to achieve a quality result. We do not want to rush through a website simply to finish it, but we also understand that businesses want to start using their investment rather than wait indefinitely for it to be completed.

Our approach is personal. We aim to give each client focused attention throughout the project, understand what they want to achieve and keep refining the work until they are happy with the result.

The websites we have delivered have been well received by our clients, and we take pride in the quality of the work we produce.

For us, the goal is not simply to build a website and move on. It is to deliver a product that the client is happy to put in front of their customers.

Your Website Can Work Alongside AI Automation

A website is also a starting point for improving other parts of your customer journey.

Once your business begins receiving enquiries, you might find that certain everyday tasks consume a significant amount of time. You may be answering the same questions repeatedly, responding to new leads, following up with potential customers or handling routine conversations.

These are areas where AI automation may help.

Depending on your business and its needs, solutions could include:

The goal is not to automate everything simply because the technology exists. It is to understand which tasks are taking up the most time and identify where automation could make a meaningful difference.

Your website, marketing and automations can work together to create a more organised customer journey, from the moment someone discovers your business to the point where they enquire, book or buy.

Does Your Business Really Need a Website?

If your social media accounts are already bringing in leads, that is a good starting point. But it does not necessarily mean your business has everything it needs to grow online.

A website gives potential customers a central place to learn about your business, explore your services, view your work and take the next step. It can support your social media marketing, strengthen your online presence and make it easier for people to evaluate what you offer.

The important thing is to build a website that does more than look good. It needs to represent your business well, be easy to use, help the right people find you and guide visitors towards meaningful action.

You do not have to make the process unnecessarily complicated or invest in features your business does not need. Start by understanding your goals and building a solution around them.

Your website should be an asset that supports your business, not just another item on your to-do list.
